English democracy is not the same as modern day democracy in England. Under the power of a monarch, there were no voting elections; the new leader the United Kingdom would be the next successor to the throne. In modern day England, Queen Elizabeth II is just a figurehead and does not have much power over England while an elected prime minister does. The British monarchy was one of the major reasons that lead to the American Revolution. Even after the revolutionary wars, one of George Washington’s supporters declared him as the new king of America but Washington rejected and opposed monarchy.
Before the American Revolutionary War started, the Americans needed an army and colonial leaders, in which they soon succeeded. During the first major battle of Bunker Hill, George Washington was declared the commander of the Continental Army. During the American Revolutionary War, America was allied with France, Spain, and the Dutch Republic, while Britain was only allied with Germany do to their protestant relations. Both the Americans and the British had various native tribes allied with them such as the Oneida, Tuscarora and Catawba who were allied with America and Onondaga, Mohawk, and Cayuga who were allied with the British. Because of all of the countries associated with this war, it began to seem as a world war other than a civil war. Congress leaders began to defend the northern borders certain that Quebec, Newfoundland and Nova Scotia would soon join in on the revolution. During the winter of 1775, Americans led by Major General Richard Montgomery and General Benedict Arnold attempted to stop the British from coming through the “back door” of Quebec, but failed which convinced Canadians to remain loyal to Britain.
